What are installments?

Payments in installments is a modality commonly practised in Latin America when people buy products or services and divide the total value in a monthly plan of payments. In Brazil, for example, the cost of one purchase can be distributed over up to 12 months.

Offering installments as part of your online checkout in Latin America is as important as providing local payment methods.

How Installments Work

When are the transactions settled?

In most countries in Latin America, the merchant is settled the full amount one day after the purchase. Brazil is the exception, where the general rule is that merchants get paid in 30 days. The alternative is to choose to expedite the receiving of funds through an ‘anticipation’ (antecipação) at an extra cost. In Mexico, anticipations are mandatory, at the merchants’ expense and this cost can not be transferred to the consumer. In all LATAM countries, issuing banks will take the risk of debt default.
